— -- How do you tell a legendary performer to take it easy when hundreds of fans are still lining up to see him? Truth is, you don't.

This week, Frankie Valli is back on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City. Just after his opening show, Valli told ABC News he still loves to be on stage.

"Every performance is exciting," Valli said. "And it's important for you to bring an energy to the performance and excite the audience. And that's what it's really all about."

But he added that it's not as easy up there as it used to be -- especially at his age.

"It was tough tonight because I did interviews all day long. I had to get up at 6:30 this morning. I just flew in from LA," said Valli, 82, after performing more than two hours on stage.

Valli said it’s the energy from fans that keeps him going.

"They're a great big help," he said. "But it really is up to you. That's what it's all about. You're the entertainer. They paid for the ticket and that's what it's all about."

So why hasn't Valli followed in the footsteps of legendary crooner Tony Bennett, who paints in New York's Central Park to help relax?

"I have thought very seriously about doing that," said Valli. "My schedule is very busy. That's one of the biggest problems I have. I just got back from Europe. And I've been working all along. I'm doing something in Puerto Rico. And then I'll go home and have maybe an eight or 10 day break. It's going to be great as long as I don't do anything that is work related."

But that break will be just a pause in his busy schedule.

"I'm not going away on vacation," he said. "I'm the kind of guy that when he goes home, will just chill out with my girlfriend at home."

Frankie Valli will be performing at the Lunt-Fontanne on Broadway for one week only. His first solo Christmas album was released last week.
