Farmers' losses due to floods estimated at EUR 50-60 mln in Latvia

BC, Riga, 19.09.2017.Print version
Latvian farmers' losses caused by heavy rains and floods in August and September are currently estimated at around EUR 50 million to EUR 60 million, as Framers' Saeima Chairman Juris Lazdins said in an interview with Latvian Television today, cites LETA.

The situation could have been much worse though - about 80% of grain has been harvested thus far, and what grain cannot be harvested could still be used as fodder, said Lazdins.

According to Lazdins, farmers hope that the European Union could compensate farmers' losses in the Baltic region.

As reported, the Agriculture Ministry will consult the agriculture ministries of Estonia and Lithuania about jointly seeking the European Commission's aid for the flood-stricken farmers in the three Baltic countries.
