Cruise passengers visiting Gozo up 171% in third quarter this year7,466 cruise passengers visited Gozo during the third quarter of the year, the National Statistics Office said today. This was up by 4,717 or 171.58% on the same period last year, when the number stood at 2,749.

In Malta, the total cruise passenger traffic during the third quarter of 2017 amounted to 214,497, this was an increase of 2.7 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

The NSO noted that there were 99 cruise liner calls in Malta during the third quarter of 2017, which was seven less than last year.

At 76.9 per cent, transit passengers accounted for the absolute majority of total traffic, reaching 164,947.

The NSO said that 14,129 passengers spent at least one night on board their berthed cruise liner, and on average, every vessel that berthed in Malta carried 2,167 passengers, 197 more than last year.

EU Member States made up the most visitors, with 71.9 per cent of total traffic, the major markets being Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy.

The total number of passengers from Non-EU countries stood at 60,217, of whom 37.5 per cent came from the United States, the NSO said.

Cruise passenger numbers registered during the first nine months of 2017 stood at 482,855, a rise of 7.6 per cent over 2016.

Of these, the NSO said, 72.0 per cent came from EU Member States. The biggest increase was recorded from the British market, which advanced by 51,773 passengers.

248 cruise liners called during the first nine months, with an average 1,947 passengers per vessel, compared to 231 calls and an average 1,942 passengers per vessel in January-September 2016.

      all very nice but does anybody actually count the number of passengers who get off the boat and take a look at Gozo? Sadly most passengers stay on board and even if they do visit Gozo their spending is very limited – they have all they need on board and already paid for!
