BC, Riga, 20.06.2018.Print version
Following the assessment of project applications submitted to the grant competition "Support for development cooperation project in recipient countries selected by the Republic of Latvia", the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has awarded funding (grants) to seven development cooperation projects to be carried out in Central Asian countries – Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan – and the countries of the European Union's Eastern Partnership – Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine, informs LETA.

Funding has been granted to "Local government development and fostering good governance in Kyrgyzstan", a project of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments; to "Capacity building in the National Food Agency of Georgia through promoting responsible business conduct in the field of veterinary drugs and facilitating the export of products of animal origin", which is a project by the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service.

The grants were given also to the following projects: "Cooperation between the justice sector institutions of Latvia and Ukraine on latest technologies for justice administration systems", a project by the Court Administration; "Improvement of standardisation in Georgia: Support for the establishment and maintenance of design systems under Eurocodes" which is a project by Latvijas Standarts or the Latvian national standardization organisation; and "Capacity building in Uzbekistan's public administration on sustainable development" , a project by the CLEANTECH LATVIA association.

In view of the limited amount of funds, the Foreign Ministry awarded partial funding to two projects: "Reinforcing the Border Police of the Republic of Georgia through the development of the service dog handling", which is a project by the State Border Guard College; and "Support for the growth of rural regions in Moldova and Georgia through fostering civic participation and capacity building in development planning and implementation at the national, regional and local administrative level", which is a project by the association Latvijas Lauku Forums (The Latvian Rural Communities Parliament).

The total funding made available for the projects is EUR 213,013. In accordance with the Development Cooperation Policy Plan for 2018 and the Competition Regulations, at least 50 percent of the funds is envisaged for projects run by civil society organizations. Thereby the grants have been awarded to the highest scoring projects among those submitted both by civil society organizations and other applicants.

Twenty seven projects totaling EUR 896,768.67 were submitted for the competition. The Foreign Ministry is happy about the keen interest that public institutions, civil society organizations and the private sector companies - all eligible for taking part in the competition under the Law on International Assistance - have shown in development cooperation projects. The applicants will receive information by e-mail on the assessment results for their particular projects.
