WASHINGTON, April 23 - /EIN News/ Pakistan is on the brink of collapse as Taliban fighters have seized control of the Buner district, 70 miles from the capital of Islamabad. According to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Pakistani government, to this point, "is basically abdicating to the Taliban and to the extremists."

As Taliban militants advance, civil unrest is plaguing the streets. In northwest Pakistan, NATO fuel tankers have been burned, convoys and terminals in the Khyber Pass attacked and offices of international aid agencies ransacked. Pakistan is struggling to come up with a strategy to stop the spread of militant influence.
