An Australian mother-of-three has recounted the awkward moment a female stranger asked her when her baby was due - five weeks after she'd given birth.

In a light-hearted Facebook post, Laura Mazza, 31, posted a photo of herself lifting up her shirt alongside a sign that read '5 weeks postpartum with a burger baby'.

'If you're still looking pregnant, if you've been mistaken for being pregnant, if you got this delicious overhang like me... embrace it,' the Melbourne-based blogger wrote.

Laura revealed that the image and blog post was written in response to being asked 'the three words that every woman dreads when she is not pregnant'.

'So when are you due?' She recalled the stranger as saying.

'Not due for my period, not due for a poo, not due for the promotion... when am I due to have my baby? That's what she meant.'

Instead of lashing out or correcting the woman, Laura simply went along with the comment to avoid 'hurting her feelings'.

Is it ever appropriate to ask if a woman is pregnant?

There are many reasons why a woman could look 'pregnant' therefore it is best to avoid commenting until you know for sure:

* They may have just had a baby in the past few months (most bellies cannot stretch to in size to carry a baby to term and just disappear over night)

* The delivery could have been difficult, and/or the baby could be challenging both of which lead to a longer birth recovery time

* They could have just had a miscarriage or lost a baby

* Some may be suffering from a condition known as diastasis recti where the abdominal muscles stretch and separate causing the organs to protrude through

'I wanted to say, well actually I had him a month ago, but instead, I said "October!" Because I'm an idiot and didn't want her to feel bad,' she said.

Laura said the encounter gave her pause for thought and a new perspective on how she viewed her body following the birth of her three children.

'You know what? I wasn't upset. I wasn't sad. I wasn't embarrassed. I didn't feel bad. I still look pregnant, and really, why the f*** wouldn't I?' She said.

'I keep having babies two years apart. I've grown their bones, their eyes, their little noses and toes and I've created their little beautiful hearts.

'My organs squished down to allow them to grow and my muscles separated to let them grow bigger.'

The blogger, who is renowned for her candid take on motherhood, also spoke about the reality of her current situation, one many new mums may be familiar with.

'I am watching them grow and nurturing them and looking after them from a place of pure exhaustion.

'A place where I open the door to the postman and my right boob (I call it my Power Tit) is hanging out, my hair matted because I haven’t had time to brush it and wearing maternity leggings,' she continued.

'But I look at them, the little things I've created and think they're beautiful, truly beautiful amazing little things.'

Laura concluded by saying that while many women may want to 'change' their bodies, they should never 'hate' their figures.

'It's done something wonderful, it's made life,' she said.
