King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima embrace unexpectedly casual look for charity visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands have chosen casual attire for a recent charity visit, blending in easily with volunteers.

The royal couple joined in on a crafting activity at Oranje Fonds for NLdoet, the largest voluntary event in the country.

The king and queen wore t-shirts and helped make a mosaic wall, which will be placed at a community centre.

"Today and tomorrow, together with thousands of social organizations in the country, the Oranje Fonds is organizing NLdoet again; the largest voluntary event in the Netherlands," the royal couple's official Instagram account shared.

"King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima also lend a hand in a community centre in Katwijk and help with making a mosaic wall.

"Tomorrow Princess Beatrix will cooperate in a play library and playground."

Oranje Fonds works to to prevent loneliness by "building a society in which everyone is able to participate, and no one is left behind," according to its official website.

It supports initiatives to assist people in poverty or who are experiencing loneliness and exclusion.

The European royals have enjoyed a long association with the charity.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima recently returned from a two-day trip to Cyprus where they were hosted by First lady Philippa Karsera and President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides for a state visit.

During the visit they attended a concert by Dutch harpist Remy van Kesteren at the Cyprus Theatre on March 5.

It was the royal couple's first official trip to the island nation and the first ever by a Dutch monarch.

The Netherland royals last hosted a state visit at the beginning of 2025 when they welcomed Portugal's visiting president.

The King and Queen were joined by their eldest daughter, and heir to the Dutch throne, Princess Amalia, for the gala inside Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

The event was white tie, meaning the Queen and her daughter wore two of the royal family's most incredible tiaras.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal is on a two-day visit to the Netherlands and his first stop was at the palace.

"Seven years after our state visit to Portugal, the Queen and I are finally able to welcome you to the Netherlands," the King said.

"We are pleased and honoured to have you here with us. And in December no less: not exactly the most pleasant month for a trip so far north," he said, referring to the wintry weather.

"But your home country is closer than it might seem. You may not have noticed, but you walked over a piece of Portugal today as you entered the Royal Palace. The cobblestones on Dam Square, just outside, come from a quarry near Porto.

"They say there are two-and-a-half million of them – though I admit I haven't actually counted them myself."
