Moscow claims Western blitzkrieg was unsuccessful
(MENAFN) Russia has successfully resisted Western attempts to divide its society and incite unrest, according to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
Speaking to students at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics on Monday, Zakharova accused Western nations of trying to isolate and destabilize Russia following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict. She claimed that the West had banked on creating divisions within Russian society, particularly through economic pressure and intergenerational discord.
“The ideological blitzkrieg was meticulously planned. They placed their bets on Russia’s defeat, but the country has overcome all these challenges,” Zakharova stated.
Since 2022, the US and EU have imposed numerous sanctions against Russia, targeting its seaborne oil exports, financial sector, and foreign reserves, among other economic restrictions. However, Moscow has repeatedly dismissed these measures as illegal and ineffective, arguing that they have failed to weaken Russia and have instead caused harm to the nations enforcing them.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at a meeting of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs last week, accused the West of exploiting the Ukraine conflict to eliminate Russia as an economic competitor. He pointed out that more than 28,500 sanctions have been imposed on Russia in recent years—more than all other countries combined. Despite this, he said, Russia’s economy has adapted and continues to grow.
Putin warned that even if current sanctions were lifted, the West would find new ways to undermine Russia. Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump, who initiated peace talks between Moscow and Kiev last month, has suggested that sanctions could be eased if a peace agreement is reached or tightened if negotiations fail.
