If you're in need of some inspiration to choose your next holiday, don't fret. A travel expert has shared her top three destinations that are conveniently just a train ride away from London.

Despite being quite a distance away, all three destinations can be reached within one day. These trips won't break the bank either, and environmentally-conscious travellers can rest assured that their journeys have a much smaller carbon footprint than air travel.

Sarah, who regularly posts 'flight-free' trip suggestions on her TikTok account, recently highlighted some stunning locations in Italy, Austria and Switzerland.

Brunico, Italy

Overlooking the tranquil setting of a lake nestled against a mountain backdrop, you'll find the town of Brunico. Sarah said: "The first is the town of Brunico in The Dolomites - it's a beautiful town in perfect reach of major sites like Lake Braies and the Three Peaks with plenty of activities like cycling, swimming and hiking."

To reach this picturesque location, Sarah advised travellers to take the Eurostar to Brussels or Amsterdam, then hop on a sleeper train to Innsbruck in Austria. She added: "Check out the Old Town here before taking two local trains with outstanding views of the mountains to Brunico."

Bern, Switzerland

Next on Sarah's list was Bern, Switzerland. She enthused: "It's one of the most beautiful places I've visited. And in summer you get to do this unforgettable activity of floating down this crystal blue river."

The Aare River in Bern is known for its clean water and gentle current, and floating along is a popular activity for locals and visitors alike, reports the Express. To get to Bern, Sarah explained: "It's super easy to get to. Take the Eurostar to Paris - have lunch here then take a three-hour train to Basel. Change here and get a final one-hour train to Bern."

Kitzbuhel, Austria

The concluding stop on Sarah's list was Kitzbuhel – a ski resort you can reach via the Amsterdam to Innsbruck night train. From there, local travel whisks you to alpine heights in just an hour and 20 minutes.

Travel costs

Wondering about the costs? Sarah spelled it out in her video’s comment section. She said: "Option 1 [Brunico]: London - Amsterdam from £82 return, Amsterdam - Innsbruck with bed in 4-person couchette from £54 (when booked 2/3 months in advance). Innsbruck - Fortezza - Brunico from £18. Option 2 [Bern]: Paris - Basel from €29. Basel - Bern from £30. Option 3 [Kitzbuhel]: Option 1 + Innsbruck - Kitzbuhel from £17."
