Two men have been arrested after a car smashed straight into a high street clothes shop.

The family-run H&Y women's clothes shop was completely devastated after a Peugeot 207 - believed to be stolen - careered into the business.

Glass shattered on impact and stock from inside the Alum Rock Road shop was scattered everywhere.

The incident happened at around 10am on Saturday.

West Midlands Police confirmed two men - who attempted to flee the scene - were arrested.

A spokesman told BirminghamLive: "Two men have been arrested after crashing into a shop.

"Officers on patrol in Birmingham spotted a Peugeot 207 being driven erratically at around 10am this morning (19 January).

"The car failed to stop for police and continued driving dangerously.

"Police temporarily lost sight of the car, and within minutes found the Peugeot crashed into a shop front on Alum Rock Road, Birmingham.

"Two men attempted to flee the scene and, after a short foot chase, were arrested.

"The car, which is believed to be stolen, has been seized for forensic examination.

"The men aged 20 and 30 have been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

"The 30-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a class A drug. They remain in police custody."
