Moldova: lyceum opens after EU-financed renovation in Balti

On 21 September, the ‘Dimitrie Cantemir’ lyceum reopened in Balti, Moldova, after a renovation carried out with the financial support of the European Union. Now, more than 1,000 students and teachers from the city can study and work in a modern, energy-efficient building.

The building was insulated and 25 solar panels with a total capacity of 10 kW were installed on the roof. This is enough to cover the lyceum’s energy consumption for three winter months. The premises of the school were equipped with ventilation and fire extinguishing systems, and the building has a special entrance for people with disabilities. The canteen was modernised and provided with new equipment.

The total cost of the project was about 24 million lei.

The renovation works are expected to reduce annual energy consumption at the lyceum by about 62 per cent.

The works were carried out as part of the project ‘Construction of water supply and sewerage infrastructure and improvement of energy efficiency of public buildings’, financed by the European Union and implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ Moldova).
