Migration: Morocco, Germany Announce Joint Voluntary Contribution to IOM MPTF

Migration: Morocco, Germany Announce Joint Voluntary Contribution to IOM MPTF

MOROCCO, April 27 - The Kingdom of Morocco and the Federal Republic of Germany announced, on Wednesday in Geneva, their joint voluntary contribution to the Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The announcement was made during a meeting held between representatives of the two countries, the head of the Department Policy Issues with Displacement and Migration at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the director general of IOM and chairman of the MPTF steering committee, António Vitorino.

By combining their financial contributions, Germany and Morocco have renewed their commitments made in 2018 at the Marrakech Intergovernmental Conference to promote safe, orderly and regular migration.

The revitalized partnership approach is fully aligned with the commitment of member states to strengthen international cooperation and support each other in achieving the 23 goals and commitments set forth in the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).

Speaking on this occasion, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Morocco in Geneva, Omar Zniber, said that Morocco, as a key player in migration governance, country of origin, transit and departure, host country of the global pact of Marrakech, member of the initiative of champion countries of the IOM, can only subscribe to the MPTF fund whose usefulness is no longer proven.

"As previously recalled by Morocco at the 1st Ministerial Meeting of IOM Champion Countries held in Rabat in 2022, the pledges of the Champion Countries will have to stand out for their ambition," he said, noting that they will have to be formulated in the form of concrete commitments, ingenious initiatives, reforms, best practices but also financial contributions.

The diplomat stressed that "Morocco's action embodies a natural symbiosis between principles and projection: A symbiosis first between a Royal Vision combining responsibility and humanism declined in the national strategy of immigration and asylum and an international agenda on migration based on the same values. Secondly, by the convergence of the Marrakech Pact with the African migration agenda. The promises of the Pact and the African agenda on migration are complementary".

With this contribution, Morocco further crystallizes these commitments into action, notably by becoming the first African and Arab contributor to the IOM MPTF, noted Zniber, ading that this joint announcement is intended to be a strong political message of cooperation and successful multilateralism.
